What is a pessary?
A pessary is a silicone medical device, that is inserted intravaginally in order to provide relief from pelvic organ prolapse symptoms and in some instances, stress urinary incontinence.
Is it the right management option for me?
At your appointment we will discuss, if necessary, the right option for you. It can prove of greatest benefit to women who suffer from 3-4th degree of pelvic organ prolapse or want extra support only at certain occasions (e.i sports) and are willing to self-manage the pessary.
How do I know what size and shape is suitable for me?
At the clinic we provide a ring, ring with a knob, dish, dish with a knob, thick ring and cube pessaries. Also, we provide a measuring procedure, where a sterilized trial ring can be inserted in order to determine the right size.
Before fitting a thorough assessment and medical history as well as pelvic floor assessment is done in order to determine your suitability for pessary. Your physiotherapist will explain your options to you and provide all the details on managing your pessary.
Ring pessary
The basic type of pessary that can be used in uterine prolapse and keep uterus in place reducing daily discomfort of prolapsed organs; reduction of heaviness in vaginal area.
Thick ring pessary is one of the most popular models, that provides extra support, occupies more space and can be used in presence or absence of cystocele (bladder prolapse) and rectocele (rectal wall prolapse).
Dish Pessary with Urethral support: Works like ring pessary, but the knob provides extra support to bladder neck therefore reducing urinary leaks on stress such as coughing.
